What's going on in Mexico?
Current Events

More Mexican migrants leaving the United States than entering. Over one million Mexicans and their families have been returning back to Mexico since 2009. Industries in which Mexicans primarily worked in the United States such as construction, have not rebounded since the reemergence economic recession in 2009. Pew research proclaims that although there are a lot of immigrants entering the U.S, approximately 870,000, the number of migrants leaving the U.S exceeds this, above 1 million. This creates a net loss of 140,000 people! Mexicans have been returning to Mexico from the U.S since 2009-2014, this is due to job opportunities or the opportunity to be reunited with their families.

Hurricane Sandra is the strongest tropical storm in the eastern Pacific that has ever been recorded so late in the season. As of 4 pm on November 25, hurricane Sandra's winds had escalated to that of a category 3 hurricane and of November 26, intensified to around a category 4 hurricane. Sandra is expected to hit popular tourist’s sites of Mexico such as those of the tip of Baja California Peninsula. This could result in detrimental effets to Mexico’s whole tourism industry and thus their economy. However, the hurricane is expected to weaken so the chance of severe thunderstorms is low over thanksgiving weekend, but heavy rain is expected which can cause flash floods and mudslides.

Mexico's Volcano Colima, also known as the fire volcano, erupted again on Wednesday November 18. This Volcano is the most active of the volcanoes in the Colima Volcanic Complex, located 428 miles west of Mexico City. Ash spewed out of the volcano's mouth and fell near the local airport delaying flights. In the past, the Volcano Colima has erupted many times however, none of these eruptions have had major effects. However, the eruptions are arriving ever so frequently hurting the environment, hopefully their won’t be any major consequences.

On Wednesday, December 3, Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of four plantiffs’ right to both consume and produce cannabis in a four to 1 vote. This is not full-on legalization, Mexico still does not allow pot except a personal possession of 5 grams or less. This is a huge step for Mexico because, it may influence decisions in the future involving the marijuana policy, and these decisions could possibly lean towards the marijuana is okay for recreational use point of view. So how does the public view this matte? The public offer conflicting views and greatly frown upon this court ruling. A poll was taken recently after this debacle and views showed that 77% of Mexicans do not believe that the legalization of marijuana should occur.
