Mexico and the United States of America have had a on again off again relationship when it comes to diplomatic relations. In 1822, the United States recognized Mexico’s independence and established Diplomatic relations when the current U.S president at that time, James Monroe, accepted Jose Manuel Zozaya as Mexican Minister to the U.S. Then in 1845 after much fighting Texas gained its independence from Mexico severing diplomatic relations of the U.S from Mexico. Ever since, there has been many difficulties with these two countries resulting in the on again of again pattern of diplomatic relations between the U.S and Mexico.  Some major issues in which diplomatic relations have been established include NAFTA, the Northwest Free Trade Agreement, established in 1994, opinions on this trade block were very controversial at the time. Many Americans believed that the Mexicans were stealing their jobs however, private business owners were happy and taxes were lower on imports. Main issues today that we can see throughout history are immigration and drugs. Relations between Mexico and America have definitely tensed due to many Mexicans sneaking illegally across the broader into the United States as well as drugs being smuggled across the border. It is issues like these that makes our strong relationship difficult.
