Treatment/Rights of Women
Women’s rights in Mexico are ever increasing. Women are now being seen as a significant, “equal”, functional member in society. Up until the twentieth century women were held to a double standard. Women were expected to stay in the house, look after the children, and follow the ways of the Virgin Mary through the belief of Marianismo. Marianismo was a set of values based on how the Virgin Mary lived. Fun fact: This cultural norm was greatly influenced by the Spaniards who first colonized the Americas and pressed Roman Catholicism. However, over time opportunities have been increasing for women such as the right to vote in national elections and work outside of home. As urbanization occurred, more women were moving out of rural areas and into the city where they found jobs and ever since, women have become increasingly important in the community. Current day there are women working in factories, owning small businesses, and gaining important roles in society. As time passed by women were also treated with more respect as they gained higher level jobs. Thus, we can see great progression in Mexico when it comes to women.
